Thank you. I have applied to do the Agriculture degree at CAFRE/Queens but am not from a farm but have an uncle who knows you! Starting to find out about more about milk and feeding.

TMR - Total Mix Ration
Basal forage can range from grass silage, forage maize, green whole crop cereal, legume silage etc mixed with "straights" eg maize meal or other cereals, distillers grains, maize gluten, rapeseed meal, citrus pulp, soya hulls etc, fermentation by-products, vegetable factory "waste", molasses etc or a specified meal from an animal feed supplier

I am also interested in this. You are saying that feeding will only work to a level, this makes sense. Thanks. This is where the genetics comes in. TMR is total meal ration or total mael repalcement? Presume silage/meal mix?

I will answer your query in general terms as more individual information is required i.e. current performance, genetic profile target milk yield, current feeding system TMR or grazing, stage of lactation etc.
Milk quality is determined by genetic potential, so you can only feed to this level, nutritional balance and herd management. Assuming genetics and management are not limiting to improve milk protein increase energy intake. Quality forage eg grass/maize silage which will improve butterfat balanced with starch sources eg cereals and digestible fibre sugar beet pulp etc. Quality protein sources eg soya essential and target a total diet protein level of 17-18%. Remember need 5 - 6MJ energy per litre milk and a cow is a ruminant so needs at least 40% quality forage if less significant problems. To answer more fully detail required
